The transfer bridge: why most brain games fail
Do brain training games actually work? A look at the 2023 meta-analysis, why Lumosity-style games raise scores but not focus, and what closes the gap.
If you've ever finished a Lumosity session feeling sharper and then sat at your desk for an hour unable to start the thing you actually needed to do β you already know the punchline. Brain games, as a category, have a transfer problem. This article explains where that gap comes from, what the research actually says, and what a tool has to do to close it.
The near-zero transfer finding
Westwood and colleagues' 2023 meta-analysis pooled 2,200+ ADHD adults across dozens of cognitive training studies. The headline number: an effect size of 0.12 on real-world attention outcomes. Statistically indistinguishable from zero. The cognitive scores in the games went up reliably. The transfer to real life did not.
Why Lumosity, Elevate, and peers don't fix this
These apps optimize for session time, daily retention, and score curves β all of which reward in-game difficulty, not real-world transfer. They have no structural reason to push you toward your actual to-do list. The product is the game; the game is the product. There's no bridge step, because the bridge step doesn't move the metric that matters to the company.
What a transfer bridge has to do
A real bridge has three properties. It must fire immediately after the activation (within seconds, not minutes β otherwise the activation window closes). It must point at a real task the user has been avoiding, not a generic suggestion. And it must be small enough that the activation runway carries the user through it β 5 minutes is the sweet spot for most adults.
